Keep vaccinations up to date for all dogs, cats and ferrets.
Keep your pets under direct supervision so they don’t come in contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance immediately.
Call your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood.
Spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets.
Avoid direct contact with unfamiliar animals, enjoying wild animals from afar.
When traveling abroad, avoid direct contact with wild animals and dogs in developing countries. Dogs are a major reservoir of rabies in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

“It’s a situation you might never come in contact with, but if you do, you certainly need to know how to handle it,” said the owner of Tennessee Valley Animal Clinic in Tuscumbia.
As Colbert County’s rabies officer this year, Davis has spent a lot of time organizing the county’s rabies clinic and has worked closely with the health department in quarantining animals that have bitten humans. With the summer in full swing, the potential increases for many people, especially children, to be exposed to rabies.

The Centers for Disease Control refer to her as a miracle, crediting her robust immune system as crucial in helping her fight the infection.
Local officials say she’s an exceptional case.
“We haven’t had a human case of rabies in a number of years in Alabama, but that doesn’t mean people should let their guards down,” Area Health Officer Karen Landers said. “We get a few bats reported to us every year. Fortunately, there are fewer cases of rabies exposure because people are better about heeding warnings to be careful with animals.
