Drivers line up for free gas in Detroit
Cars stretched down the block from Greenfield and 7 Mile Road in Detroit on Friday morning as drivers vied for a free tank of gas paid for by a Detroit-bred TV judge.
And Judge Greg Mathis, in the 12th season of his reality-based court show, was happy to help 92 drivers with up to $92 in gas each at the Mobil station. Drivers learned about the opportunity after it was announced on WMXD-FM (92.3).
Mathis said it was payback for Detroiters giving him a vote of confidence years ago when they elected him judge for the 36th District Court in Detroit, looking past his troubled youth.
"They elected me," said the judge, a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and the University of Detroit School of Law who grew up in the Brewster-Douglass housing projects just north of downtown Detroit. "L.A. didn't elect me judge. Chicago didn't elect me judge. Detroiters took a chance on me. It's just the right thing to do. And when you're blessed, you have to look out for the rest."
The gas giveaway took place near the Mathis Community Center in northwest Detroit. A nondescript brick building, the center -- funded mainly by Mathis -- hosts bingo, self-improvement classes, food and clothing giveaways and training to help ex-offenders transition back into their communities.
"No matter what international fame he's achieved, he's still a hometown guy," radio personality Frankie Darcell said shortly after she announced the location on air. "This is one of his ways of giving back."
Detroiter Martin Oliver, 35, drove his white 1998 Land Rover up to the pump, first in line after spotting the radio truck in the gas station parking lot. The former security guard who was laid off five months ago said he was grateful for Mathis' generosity.
"Luckily, my wife is working currently, so it hasn't been too bad," he said. "It's been hard, but it could be worse. Judge Mathis -- he's a great guy."
Mike Safiedine, 60, of Dearborn Heights, who has owned the Mobil station for more than 35 years, said he was enjoying the smiles on customers' faces.
"Everybody's happy. I'm happy," he said. "The people need it, especially (because) the price is very high."
