Simsbury Summer Camp Offers a Taste of STEM Fields
During the week of July 18, the Simsbury Department of Continuing Education will host its first Gateway Academy Summer Engineering Day Camp. The Gateway Academy curriculum is a joint program between Project Lead The Way (PLTW) and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation (SME-EF). The Simsbury Chapter will be offered for Grades 5 to 8 who want a week-long summertime experience programming robotics, designing eco-friendly jewelry or launching rockets.
Simsbury High School provides a PLTW high school STEM program that offers courses in engineering and biomedical sciences. Gateway Academy is an extension of the PLTW program that engages students during the school year and uses the same Autodesk Inventor software found in the high school's engineering design courses.
The camps are held at PLTW-certified schools because the design software and equipment is available through PLTW courses offered during the school year. All together, approximately 5,000 middle school students in 29 states will attend a Gateway Academy camp this summer, some of which are devoted exclusively to girls, to encourage more of them to take STEM courses.

Spaces are still available in sessions 2 through 5 at the Petaluma Wildlife Museum’s 2011 summer camp program. We’re big fans of this totally unique, educational, neighborhood camp, a program that first became a favorite part of our family’s summer schedule 12 years ago and though there have been lots of changes of late, it’s all for the betterment of an evolving environment teaching critical lessons for today’s world, through fun, captivating activity, hands-on animal care, educational games and special guest visits from Classroom Safari and Reptile Rescue.
Campers gain experience in exotic animal husbandry. Throughout the day, they’ll handle and provide practical care to the museum animals under the supervision of camp counselors. Each week’s session runs Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm. Fee is $250 per student. A maximum of 40 students per session creates an opportunity for campers to work and have fun in small groups. The Wildlife Museum is located at 201 Fair Street, Petaluma, in its own dedicated facility at the back of the Petaluma High School parking lot.
