Dunbar gets a health teacher

She will offer health screenings, such as diabetes testing, blood-sugar levels and blood pressure checks at an office in the Renaissance Preserve Senior Apartments, near the county Health Department’s Michigan Avenue offices. Failla will educate on the dangers of untreated chronic diseases.

Sick patients will be referred to other health clinics. Her office will likely be open twice weekly — likely 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

“People feel fine, but their blood pressure may be high,” she said. “Sometimes people just don’t understand they might have diabetes or hypertension.”

Failla’s presence in east Fort Myers is something of a reversal for Family Health Centers, this area’s go-to primary care health organization for low-income residents.

After $230,000 annual losses at its Paul Laurence Dunbar clinic on Martin Luther King Boulevard, the nonprofit decided last year to scale back operations to one day a week.
It remained that way until this month, when Lee Memorial Health System stepped in and opened a clinic at the site. It provides treatment Monday through Friday.

Family Health Centers has thought about a health education program in the community for years, said spokesman Bob Johns. Family Health Centers officials began talking about the idea shortly after the Dunbar clinic scale-back as a way for the organization to maintain a presence in the community. Hypertension, diabetes and heart disease-related ailments accounted for about 70 percent of the cases Family Health Centers saw at its Dunbar clinic.

“It’s going to be a benefit for those residents — I’ll tell you that,” said James Muwakkil, president of the Lee County Chapter of the NAACP, which has worked with Family Health Centers to keep their presence in the community.

Longtime Dunbar-area resident Earl Barnes agreed. Large numbers of old and young suffer from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, he said.

“It’s very high in this area, especially among the elderly,” Barnes said. “But even in the middle-aged people. It’s kind of running rampant in the community.” Failla’s hiring is only the latest in a series of Family Health Centers initiatives under way in Fort Myers.
