Lexi, 2, battles leukemia; Santa Barbara girl in need of marrow donorA week before Lexi would blow out the candles on her second birthday cake, the talkative toddler was diagnosed with a rare and often terminal cancer.
Unsuspicious symptoms – a few fevers and ear infections – led to a diagnosis that would seem nightmarishly unreal to any parent: acute myeloid leukemia.
After a harrowing battle against the illness, and a short stint in remission, Lexi’s family is now reaching out to the community to find a donor with matching bone marrow.
“She’s young and strong,” said Kathrine Krasmoff, Lexi’s mother. She was told that there is a 65 to 70 percent success rate with such transfusions, but this number could be low for Lexi because of her age.
“We are hoping the chances are much bigger than that,” Krasmoff said.
Krasmoff described her daughter as being an energetic, caring, 2-year-old with communication skills that wowed all the nurses.
“Everywhere we go she has this personality,” Krasmoff said. “She just starts talking to everyone.”
She also helps her mother take care of her three-month-old brother Caleb, telling her when his diaper needs changing or cleaning up messes he’s made without being asked.
When either she or her husband, Jonathan Krasmoff, needs inspiration, Lexi is the one to provide it.
“Her doctor said ‘Just look to Lexi and let her lead the way,’” Krasmoff said, “and that’s what we live by. It’s so true.”
The toddler is blissfully oblivious and blessedly cooperative said her mother. She never complains of going to the hospital. When asked what she thought cancer is, the toddler responded “platelets and chemo,” Krasmoff said.
After diagnosis last September, the Krasmoffs began to work rigorously with their doctor. Lexi went through chemo treatments about once a month for six months.
It seemed as though their nightmare had ended this February. Her treatments concluded and after a series of tests her doctors confirmed that the cancer had gone into remission.
“‘She went through this like a breeze,’” her doctor told Krasmoff, “‘the chance for a relapse is so slim at this point.
