C. Frederick Robinson was a 'champion of the under-served,' admirers say
FLINT, Michigan — Funeral services for Flint civil rights pioneer C. Frederick Robinson have been set for Monday while shaken family and friends continue to remember Robinson for a lifetime dedicated to justice.
Robinson, 79, was shot to death in his home Friday night on Brookside Drive in the city’s College and Cultural Neighborhood. Police have released few details about the incident, which remains under investigation.
He was widely known for his work in the 1950s and 1960s, most notably championing Flint’s referendum against housing discrimination in 1968, the first of its kind in the nation.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at the Christ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church on Hamilton Avenue. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Moon Funeral Home on Flint Park Boulevard.
He will be buried at Flint Memorial Park Cemetery.
Before his death, Robinson was still working as an attorney in his North Saginaw Street office. And, he believed so strongly in his duty as a criminal defense attorney that he would represent his own attacker, said his pastor, the Rev. Mark A. Jones of Christ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church on Hamilton Avenue.
“He would have gladly attempted to represent that person,” Jones said. “He didn’t shun his responsibilities.”
As an attorney, he had the tenacity of a bulldog, Jones said of Robinson, who represented both the church and Jones himself.
“He knew the law backward and forward,” Jones said. “He was nobody’s pushover. You had a fighter on your side.”
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Robinson was a frequent visitor to his office. Leyton said Robinson always reminded him that a prosecutor should have compassion.
“He was a fighter for his clients,” Leyton said. “He was a man with great compassion. He would continuously remind me that many of his clients were young people who in many instances were growing up under tough circumstances.”
Robinson was a “champion of the under-served” who fought for their rights to ensure they got a fair shot in the legal system and in life, said the president of the Flint Branch of the NAACP.
“We always hold up those who have something, but not those who do not,” said Frances Gilcreast, president of the NAACP Flint chapter. “Those that don’t, they fall through the cracks. Anytime you can find someone who can hold someone (less fortunate), you have a champion.
