Downbeach artist unleashes Lucy the Elephant at coffeehouse exhibit

Steve Kuzma, a Ventnor-based painter, will give visitors a vision of a living, breathing Lucy the Elephant during his exhibit at the second annual Coffeehouse and Art Show 6-9 p.m. June 30 and July 1 at the Martin Bloom Community Pavilion, 101 S. Huntington Ave. in Margate. All 50 paintings in the exhibit reflect Kuzma’s love of the natural beauty that exists at the Jersey Shore.

Famous for his bright, bold sports illustration work in acrylic, including the Sarajevo Olympics, 1982 World Cup Soccer and New York City Marathon spreads in the New York Times, Kuzma’s work has evolved over time into a softer, contemporary impressionist style. The mixed media paintings, a combination of water-mixable oil, watercolor, pastel and wax, are luminous and take their own life in different lights and times of day.   

Kuzma had an illustration studio in New York for 15 years. Living in Ventnor since 2007, he spends most of his time year-round painting on the boardwalk. He has painted the ocean during the hurricane, in snow storms, and during the summer. Besides Lucy the Elephant in Margate and Ventnor beach, other loved vistas are the Forsythe Wildlife refuge, the wind turbines at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority, the Longport jetty, Avalon’s dunes, Long Beach Island sunsets, sailboats as commissioned paintings, and the moon over Cape May.
