New England’s Labor Day weekend tradition, the ninth-annual Deutsche Bank Championship is scheduled for Aug. 30 to Sept. 5 at TPC Boston in Norton. Featuring a record $8 million purse and a $1.44 million winner’s check, it enters its fifth year as a PGA TOUR Playoffs event and is the second of four stops in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.
The Deutsche Bank Championship’s list of champions expected to return in 2011 includes defending champion Charley Hoffman, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Steve Stricker and Adam Scott.
Hoffman earned his second PGA TOUR title at last year’s Deutsche Bank Championship with a final round of torrid shot-making. He made 11 birdies and carded a tournament-record and personal-best 9-under-par 62 on Labor Day to overcome a four-stroke deficit after three rounds and win by a record five strokes with a Championship record-tying overall score of 22-under 262. Hoffman tied a Championship record for the back nine by shooting 6-under par 29.
“It’s definitely the top victory in my career. All together, I haven’t played a better round of golf given the situation,” Hoffman said. “It was a lot of fun knowing that I could do that coming down the stretch in a big-time playoff event like the Deutsche Bank. It is a major on the PGA TOUR for the most part. It’s the road to the FedExCup final, and it’s a big event. It’s a climax to the year. I’m going to play hard during the regular-season events so I can hopefully get back there and defend my title.”
Since its inception in 2003, the Deutsche Bank Championship has generated $19.4 million for the Tiger Woods Foundation and many New England-area charities.

Germany urged to freeze Taib's assets - Hornbill Unleashed
Germany, which has been in the forefront on calls for the “effective combating of corruption”, has been urged to “freeze all the assets of kleptocrat” Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud.
The call for Chancellor Angella Merkel to “clarify business ties” that leading German financial institute, Deutsche Bank, has with Taib comes just over month after Switzerland said it would investigate the matter.
Three Swiss and German NGOs wrote to Merkel informing her of Duetsche Bank’s lucrative involvement with Taib.
The NGOs are Swiss-based Bruno Manser Fund (BMF), a German rainforest advocacy group Rettet den Regenwald and the Society for Threatened People.
In a joint statement today, they said: “We are seriously concerned that, as a leading German financial institute, Deutsche Bank is closely cooperating with the highly corrupt and internationally discredited Taib regime.
“We feel that this cooperation cannot be in the interest of the German government, which is globally promoting the effective combating of corruption.
“We are asking the German government to clarify Deutsche Bank’s business ties with Taib and to freeze all his German assets.”
Describing Taib as “one of Southeast Asia’s leading kleptocrats”, they alleged that Deutsche Bank has conducted several important business transactions for the Sarawak government.
In 2005, Deutsche Bank was the sole bookrunner for the US$600 million listing of Sarawak International Incorporated in Labuan.
Before December 2004, Deutsche Bank arranged a US$135 million loan for the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), a state body controlled by Taib.
