Summer begins at the Kimmel
At 14 hours long, you're going to need the gentle accoutrements of chair massage and seated henna tattooing offered up at this year's version of the Kimmel Center's annual Summer Solstice Celebration.
Not every aspect of the Summer Solstice event will go by in a heated blur.
The First-Person Arts Story Slam of true-to-life prose may be harrowing, but how loud can a group of tall-tale tellers get? Classical guitarist Miloð Karadagli will bathe the stage with a sense of calm rather than commotion. The Philly Folk Parade, featuring the creakily sonorous The Great Unknown and Spinning Leaves, will leave you breathless with its cool emotionalism and gentle country sounds.
You will want to hang on to some breath. After those relaxed moments, Rennie Harris' RHAW hip-hop dance troupe stomps around; Toy Soldiers does its brusque, harmony-filled takes on The Bandlike Americana; and the screeching queens of Bob & Barbara's Drag Show yip it up.
There will be Brazilian music troupes such as Minas, improvisational drum snaps from Leana Song's 12-member world percussion ensemble, and more than a few soul-sonic singers and rappers (Ethel Cee and Reef the Lost Cauze, respectively) with DJs along for the ride. There's a twist on the sobriety of Latin dance traditionalism, what with AfroTaino Productions' experimental MAMBO3000 with DJ Rahsaan and Philly's most magical mouthpiece of electro-Caribbean music El Malito.
For all the kids, dance, fashion, and drum fare, the coolest part of this celebration comes when Philly songwriter-singer Phil Roy performs with local chef Marc Vetri. The two friends are already busy this week at the grounds of the Navy Yard, where both will cook at Vetri's Great Chefs event for Alex's Lemonade Stand. Then, they will put down their ladles to shake the floor of the Kimmel.
The bluesy, literate Roy has penned tunes for Ray Charles and Joe Cocker, and he released critically acclaimed albums such as Issues + Options.

12:30pm | Innovation Studio | Family Sara O’Brien performs songs written “by kids for kids” to inspire reading and writing, promote healthy living, build confidence and celebrate community! Sara O’Brien’s sound is like Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Natalie Merchant and Lucinda Williams with a splash of Susan Tedeschi. Her music touches the heartstrings of kids as young as 3 and as old as 80.
The Kimmel Center’s Creative Music Program features a weekend music education course directed by producer/composer Anthony Tidd. The Youth Jazz Ensemble includes students ranging in age from 13 to 18, who will be performing selections from the pieces they have studied this year, including jazz standards chosen by band leader Victor North, as well as original compositions written by band leaders Steve Tirpak, Craig Mciver and Anthony Tidd.4pm | Commonwealth Plaza | String Band Celebrating their 91st year, the Aqua String Band has entertained countless people and has celebrated its unique Philadelphia Mummers tradition across the globe. 5:15pm | Commonwealth Plaza | Dance First Person Arts is excited to bring their popular StorySlam back to the Summer Solstice. Regularly held twice a month at World Cafe Live and L’Etage, StorySlams are storytelling competitions where members of the audience can share their own personal story. Have a good tale on the theme “Summer Vacation?” Then sign up outside of the Perelman Theater prior to show time. We’ll pick ten storytellers over the course of the performance and maybe you’ll walk away the winner.
