Tuition costs holding steady at Allegany College
“For years we were one of the highest, if not the highest, for tuition rates,” Stevens told trustees at their regular meeting Monday afternoon. “We were fifth highest in 2011. LCC hoops outlast Rockingham C.C. in season's final home game ...
On a day when its sophomores were honored, the freshmen stole the show.
North Lenoir product Tray Harris scored 27 points and fellow freshman Marquez Jones of Kinston added 22 points to lead Lenoir Community College to a 94-86 win over visiting Rockingham C.C. Saturday in its final home game of the year.
“We let the sophomores start the game, but the freshman finished strong,” LCC head coach Bobby Dawson said. “It looks like we’re in good hands for next year.”
Dawson honored his “upperclassmen” by allowing five to start — four who normally come off the bench — and with that lineup the Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead. But once Dawson inserted freshmen C.J. Melvin, Nash Carter, Jones and Harris, the tables quickly turned.
The Lancers (18-7, 13-5 Region X) immediately scored the next six points and methodically hung with the Eagles before taking their first and last lead at 30-29 on a pair of free throws by sophomore Jacorian Callier, the only normal starter to begin Saturday’s game for LCC.
From there LCC completely took control by ending the first half on a 15-4 run, and upped their six-point halftime lead to double digits when Jones stole the inbounds pass under his own basket and converted the layup for a 63-53 lead with 13:35 left.
Although RCC’s K.J. Ross led all scorers with 29 points, the Lancers’ lead never dipped below five the rest of the game.
Joining Harris and Jones in double figures for LCC was Callier with 15 points and freshman Dallas Best with 13.
“It just was not a real normal feel to the games that we usually have,” Dawson said. “We made some costly mistakes (early) but in the end we picked it up when we needed to.”
LCC begins this week’s Region X tournament — held Thursday-Sunday at Rockingham C.C. — with eight wins in their last nine games. That has Dawson feeling pretty positive about the weekend to come.
“(A record of) 18-7 for this team has definitely been a good year,” Dawson said. “This year had been good, now we just have to prepare and get ready for the tournament.”
Lancers sweep double-header
Lee Taylor went 3-for-4 and starter Andrew MacDonald tossed five innings of five strikeout shutout baseball to give LCC a 6-0 Game 1 win in its double-header with visiting Allegany College of Maryland.
