New role transforms Dempsey

Let’s imagine for a second the 911 call. “Male. Fell off a building. It can’t be . . . yes, it is McDreamy. He’s McBleeding.”

Or should we say that it was McDreamy, of “Grey’s Anatomy” fame, who was transforming his career — without any trips to Michael Reese — while on the Chicago set of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.”

“There I was, dangling off buildings, running through the streets and tripping on a lot of rubble,” says Patrick Dempsey, who wants the world to know he put all on the line here.

“There is a sequence in this new ‘Transformers’ where all these explosions are happening — boom, boom, boom — as I’m coming up the river,” he says. “It’s a really big shot that required us to take over 10 city blocks.

“All we had was one or two takes, and my adrenaline was pounding,” he says. “The explosions filled my ears. The river was on fire. All I could think was, ‘I love being a sensitive doctor on TV, but this is my masculine moment.”

In other words, he loves kicking a certain three-letter word. Or in every puppy-dog doc, there’s an inner caveman raring to get out. “I love action movies,” says Dempsey, 45, best known for being a calming influence in scrubs.

Dare we say it? “Yes, you can print it, Patrick Dempsey, daredevil,” he says, laughing. “Of course, the downside is that if I get a nick on me, I’ll hear, ‘McDreamy down. Needs a Band-Aid.’

“This is my masculine moment. And it’s the most fun I’ve ever had on a movie.”

Dempsey is the new human on the block in the Michael Bay action flick, the third in the “Transformers” franchise. In “Dark of the Moon,” it’s more robots battling one another and more of series star Shia LaBeouf trying to save his human hide.

Specifics: In the newest installment, the Autobots hear about a Cybertronian spacecraft, which is hidden on the moon. The race is on against the Decepticons to find it and explore its secrets.

Dempsey is one of those wily business types who’s there to remind everyone of the big cash on the line.

“I play an investment banker,” he says. “Shia’s girlfriend works for me. My character thrives on making them feel uncomfortable.

Patrick Dempsey got behind the wheel of Mazda's Formula 1 car yesterday for a race at Le Mans. It's been a busy week for Patrick, who helped present his pal and Sweet Home Alabama costar Reese Witherspoon with the MTV Movie Awards' generation award on Sunday. While Patrick is abroad, there are rumors back home that he won't return to Grey's Anatomy next season. Patrick's rep cleared up the confusion , which resulted from a quote he gave to Vogue Italia , by saying "[Patrick] was referring to the fact that his contract is up at the end of next season, and we have no idea what the future holds." His small-screen career may be in limbo, but soon enough we'll see more of Patrick in Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon when it opens on June 29.
