We're less than two months away from that historic day, which would put a real downer on the induction ceremonies if no active players are present. And the first regular season game is slated for Sept. 8 between the last two Super Bowl champions - the

DIY Labor Induction Popular, Ineffective - This Week In ...

. For this study researchers surveyed new moms at a teaching hospital in the Midwest and asked them questions about whether or not they tried to induce their labor and what specific methods they used to do it. They were also asked how they found their information about self-induction and whether they had OK’ed it with their doctors beforehand.

The researchers discovered that just over half of the women had, in fact, tried to induce their labor themselves and they got information on how to do it from family members or friends. Fewer than half of the women talked to their doctors ahead of time before trying to bring about the start of their own labor.

The most common method used, researchers discovered, was walking—with more than 40% of the DIYers trying to induce their labor with a brisk walk. Sex came in a distant second at about 23% and eating spicy foods came in at third place with about 10% of self-inducing women trying that.

Masturbation and nipple stimulation were used by only a few women, as were herbal remedies, laxatives, acupuncture and intense exercise. Women who tried to induce their own labor without medical supervision tended to be younger and had had fewer children. They were also more likely to be further along in their pregnancies and to have had a vaginal birth instead of a cesarean the last time they gave birth.

The good news here, say researchers, is that most of the techniques used for do-it-yourself labor induction are probably not going to harm either the mother or the baby. But they’re not likely to actually be effective, either. The lead researcher on this study, Dr. Jonathon Schaffir, says in an interview with Ohio State University’s Research News that ultimately the expectant mothers have no real control over when they begin labor. These days most birth experts believe that labor is jump-started by hormones produced by the fetus—not the mother.

And, of course, some of the methods could be dangerous. Castor oil can dehydrate the mother and may even cause the infant to have a bowel movement in utero . The herb blue cohosh is a popular herbal remedy used to induce labor but at least three reports of complications have been tied to it. Perinatal stroke, heart attack and multi-organ hypoxic injury have all been associated, although rarely, with the herb.
