Re-Telling Old Tales for a Hot Summer's Day

As the sweltering heat of summer soon will pound away and even the smallest exertion takes great effort making one feel like Frosty the Snowman in a hot house, there are two movies to chill with in amped up air conditioning. “Tangled” and “Gnomeo and Juliet,” animated films for both children and adults. This reviewer would not encourage the indolence of the young – they already spend too much time on the sofa, playing video games munching on junk food and not getting enough exercise – however both these films exhibit great comedic charm for the entire family. So while it’s hot outside, these movies can warm the insides.

First, a viewer can let down his hair (couldn’t resist) with “Tangled,” which retells the story of Rapunzel, which, like many Disney films leans towards young girls in characters like Cinderella, Snow White and the Little Mermaid. Rapunzel is no different. Disney is a funny kind of movie studio, for example with the bland “Secretariat” compared to “Tangled,” Disney produces adult films for children and children’s films for adults.

Kidnapped as a child and raised by an extremely elderly witch who sings to Rapunzel’s magic hair in order to stay young. Here, Rapunzel’s hair becomes fairy tale Botox. Gangly teenage Rapunzel dreams of leaving her prison tower in order to see the yearly flying lanterns that happen to be released on her birthday. She doesn’t know that the lights are flown in her honor since Rapunzel is really the lost kidnapped princess.

Enter, dashing and doofy Flynn Rider who is being chased by both the palace guards and ruffians. Flynn helps Rapunzel escape and then he takes her to a marauder bar where these thugs would put the Capital One bank’s Vikings to shame with their 11 hour Broadway show stoppers. They belong more to vaudeville than the most wanted list.

In fact, “Tangled” is filmed like a Broadway musical probably in hopes of expanding the franchise as with “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

With voices by Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Brad Garrett and Donna Murphy, “Tangled” has all of the Disney charms peppered with some ultra-light feminism, Hallmark card sappiness, love conquers all and the follow your dreams message. With ninja like precision, Rapunzel flies, climbs and tangles up in knots any one that stands in her way from seeing the yearly flashing lights.

“Tangled” is a delightful film with the usual Disney charm, neurotic supporting creatures like a Jiminy Cricket-like chameleon and a horse who thinks he’s a bloodhound. This film owes a great deal too quirky cartoon worlds like “Shrek.” Today every fairy tale seems up for grabs in modern re-telling. Where’s the Tree Little Pigs as real estate brokers or Jack and the Beanstalk told from an environmentalist point of view. And hasn’t poor old Captain Hook, a disabled navy veteran been maligned enough? Where’s his story? “Tangled” continues the sentimental goofy world of Mickey’s, Minnie’s, Donald’s and Pluto’s envisioned by sappy, and still gooey, old Uncle Walt.
