Releases Impact Lake Yankton

&Ldquo; The river has gotten so high that, even at 150,000 cfs, (it) was higher than Lake Yankton,”  said Dave Becker of the Corps. “Once it got higher than Lake Yankton, it started backfilling and filling Lake Yankton. That has been going on probably since the releases got to 145,000 cfs. Now that we are at 155,000 cfs today and are going to 160,000 cfs tomorrow that will probably raise the level of Lake Yankton perhaps another foot.” “What we are looking at is, ‘For public safety what should we do?’” Ledbetter said. “We have not made that decision yet. We are looking at the river based on what we expect for the 160,000 cfs. We have marked a point where we believe it will be. Based on that, Chief White Crane will still be accessible (by Toe Road.)” “Fishing along Lake Yankton shouldn’t be a problem, but parking may become an issue,” Ledbetter said. “We did close the handicap fishing dock on Lake Yankton (Tuesday), as well as the beach playground. We are just keeping an eye on the levels at the beach. There is still sand, and the parking is unaffected at the beach at this point.” “Lake Yankton is going to go another foot higher than it was at 150,000 cfs, and that is going to affect the recreation,” Becker said. “Missouri river fish are going to continue to be able to swim into Lake Yankton. Lake Yankton has been a pretty closely regulated fishery for years, and both states and the hatchery really worked to turn that into a nice fishery. We hope that when this is all said and done, it still is.” “You go down there, and it just doesn’t seem real,” he said. “It is weird seeing this, and it will be just as weird when the water goes down to see what is left. (Facilities) were not designed for this  extreme event and we hope they weather this just fine, because they are great facilities. You just can’t snap your fingers to re-create these facilities because it does take time and money.
