From drugs to dogs, man turns life around

In the middle of one of the year's hottest afternoons, Micah Frazier was busy fixing hot dogs until a passing driver stopped to ask for some directions. "Top of the hill by the orange flags!" Frazier replied, pointing with his tongs. In the meantime, two more customers had walked up. Most daytimes nowadays you'll find Frazier working his hot-dog cart at the bus station on Pettigrew Street. Nighttimes, you'll find him home with his kids in their apartment near South Square. Just over a year ago, you'd have found him, and them, at Urban Ministries' homeless shelter. "It's only been one year," he said, "but I think I've made quite a big accomplishment." Frazier, 35, still has his struggles. Heat is an annoyance for a man serving hot dogs on the sidewalk, but rain can cost a day's business. The money he pays to rent his cart, a 1967 model, takes a deep bite out of his income. He drives an old truck that breaks down, the hours are long and being a single dad is a challenge in itself. "My daughter is a teenager now," Frazier said. "My lord." Frazier's struggles are compounded by felony convictions from a past life in Raleigh, when he sold drugs, instead of hot dogs. He's served time in federal prison. After his home was broken into at gunpoint, his children made him reconsider his approach to life and he resolved to make a change. "I hit rock bottom," he said. First thing was a change of address, because they were evicted from their rental home. He went to shelters in Raleigh, he said, but they had no provision for men with children. For two weeks, they stayed with Frazier's mother in Chapel Hill, but that didn't work out Someone suggested he try Durham, where Urban Ministries had a program they could try. That was late in 2009. After seven months of counseling, familial bonding - four people, one bedroom - and working the streets with resume in hand, the Fraziers set out on their own again. "I've never seen anybody work so hard to find a job," caseworker Mandy Sackreiter said at the time. "That is still true, even now," she said last week. "He seems to be doing very well." By the time he left the shelter in May 2010, Frazier had work and was enrolled in a food-service training course at N.C. Central University. He found a calling in culinary arts and hospitality. Certificates to prove it hang framed on his living-room wall. When he finished his NCCU course, he had a job - but the hours were long, the pay was low and he had children to consider.
