Thieves creating troubles for US 95 widening project

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - Relentless thieves are creating a trail of troubles for the U.S. 95 widening project, set for completion next summer.

The operation to widen the northwest part of the six mile stretch of highway, from Washington to Ann Road, is being stalled by one obstacle after the next.

The rash of crime isn't only potentially causing a prolonged inconvenience. It's also putting commuters at risk.

Things to help guide travelers, like electronic message boards and freeway lights, are being impacted by the constant crimes. Wiring that carries electricity is regularly being cut, heightening the danger for drivers.

Workers are often being sent home, arriving with sites along the highway to find equipment vanished or damaged.

"It's a weekly occurrence. Guys show up for work in the morning, and they can't work because their piece of equipment doesn't have a battery in it," said Tim Sessions, Assistant Project Manager with Capriati Construction.

Capriati Construction is the contractor behind the nearly $69 million dollar deal funded by state and federal money.

Assistant Project Manager Tim Sessions says he still anticipates the project to be complete on time but says the thefts are making that a tough goal.

According to Sessions, at one site alone, near the Santa Fe Hotel and Casino, $15,000 dollars worth of copper has been stripped.

Not to mention, thousands of gallons worth of fuel is regularly being siphoned from construction vehicles, and tens of thousands of pounds of steel rebar has been disappearing by the week.

"Taxpayers are the ones paying for this project. We are the contractor, and we are obligated to get this job complete on time," added Sessions.

Nevada Department of Transportation says the cost of replacing lost equipment falls on the contractor and not taxpayers.

Las Vegas Metro Police's Construction Theft Detail is pumping up patrols along U.S. 95, but police are also asking for the public's help.

"We hope that people would call us because, as you know, we can't be sitting on these job sites all the time. We can't be focused on those areas all the time," said Sgt. E.P. Brown.

Police say they are working with local recycling yards to flag any suspicious material that comes in.
