Jeff Brazier: Don't stop - or you'll fall asleep!

My weekends are rarely as eventful as the one just gone.

The boys went off to Auntie Vick’s on Friday evening and I went on to the O2 to meet a friend who shares an interest in ballet! Ever since Dancing on Ice I have been keen to go.

The front-row tickets for Romeo and Juliet were maybe a little too good as they offered very little view of the footwork. I found myself flitting between screen and show to catch every breathtaking shape pulled by Romeo, a beast of a man capable of some mean feats.

I must admit I did struggle to find my place in the story at times but the performance was unbelievable and my friend liked the tights so there was something for everyone!

On Saturday I went back to Ascot, where I was born, for my first time at the races. All my friends rave about going to Ascot – it’s a bit of an Essex tradition really, limos, Pimm’s, all the things we love and hold dear!

I got soaked getting off the train but soon realised my suit was waterproof, so thank you Terence Trout, I’ll definitely buy from you again.

It was rowdy and quite drunken but lots of fun seeing the horses run and the banter fly. It was fantastic to spend time with some very close friends and new friends, too.

As you can see from the photo, all day drinking isn’t a speciality of mine but I was back on the dance floor of Tiger Tiger after a little snooze!

I was home at 12.30am in preparation for the most important event of the weekend: Bobby’s football tournament and Father’s Day! I picked the boys up at 8am and opened their wonderful home-made cards before leaving for the five-a-side in Ongar, Essex.

Bob scored a great goal in one of the games – I told him afterwards it was the best Father’s Day present he could have given. Two games later he scored again and ran over to me screaming ‘Happy Father’s Day, Dad, that one’s for you’. I melted.

The rest of the day was spent chasing the boys around, watching them play and cleaning the house as usual!

It wasn’t until 5pm that I thought ‘Come on Jeff, if you’re ever going to just sit on the sofa and do nothing it’s got to be today’.

Then 30 minutes of Police Academy and one hour later I woke up and had learned an invaluable lesson. Us parents don’t seem to stop because the minute we do, we fall asleep.

Plus, if you’ve got one like Fred he sees me sleeping as a huge opportunity to creep upstairs and spray each and every one of my aftershaves on himself. He will often draw a tattoo on his leg, too, so sleep can also be quite dangerous!

You Get More Flies With Vinegar

As a kid I used to hear the saying “You Get More Flies With Honey Than With Vinegar” and think to myself, “That’s dumb, who would want more flies?” Well it turns out you actually get more flies with vinegar. If you’re trying to get rid of them that is.

In a previous post I mentioned that my Homemade Weed Killer could also clean your kitchen and knock flies out of the air. Well today I saw a fly in my house (yes, in February!) and thought that since spring is almost here I’d remind everyone about this effect of my weed-killer/cleaner.

In case you forgot or don’t want to click on the link above, my concoction is very simple.

GreenerGreener Natural, Non-Toxic, Homemade, Weed Killer/Household Cleaner/Fly Spray:

Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar Add a few drops of liquid soap And a stick of cinnamon Shake it up and spray away

This is an awesome alternative to chemical bug sprays but I can’t actually call this a fly killer because it doesn’t seem to kill them. It does, however, make them unable to fly. And since it’s a spray they can’t avoid it so even if they’re flying it knocks them right out of the air.

So no more chasing flies around the house. Listening for the tell-tale buzz. Trying to follow it and see where it lands. Slooooowly sneaking up on it and carefully aiming your nasty fly swatter only to miss. Now you just spray them and they drop. Like flies. So to speak

Of course then you have to grab them with something and squish them. Blech.

I know I hate killing things too. This whole site is about being kinder and gentler to the earth but flies are vectors for diseases like typhoid, cholera, dysentery, and more so I won’t have them roaming freely in my house.

And the nice thing about spraying them with my vinegar-soap-cinnamon spray is that you can kill the flies and clean the area at the same time. And it costs pennies to mix up a bottle.

It’s a win-win. Unless you’re a fly.
