Doug Salvatore: No Triple Crown, but Belmont offers next best thing

More than 30,000 registered thoroughbreds are born in the United States each year, and it's not uncommon for one to rise above the rest.

The Triple Crown provides a great test for a superior 3-year-old. To sweep the series, a horse must first win the 11/4-mile Kentucky Derby. It must return on just 13 days rest and win the 13/16-mile Preakness.

The sweep of the Triple Crown can be completed three weeks later with a win in the Belmont Stakes at the grueling distance of 11/2 miles.

Three different racetracks, three different distances, and fresh challengers will inevitably appear along the way to change the complexion of races from a pace standpoint.

When Animal Kingdom's bid to win the Preakness came up a half-length short, it marked the 33rd straight year in which the Triple Crown was left vacated. The drought goes all the way back to the great Spectacular Bid in 1979.

For some hard-core horse racing fans, it is a pleasant pastime to rate the great champions who have competed in this country. Thanks to the wealth of information available at Lexington's Keeneland Library, I've been able to study past performances and result charts for great horses and the competition they faced going all the way back to the late 1890s. Thanks to YouTube, you can watch many great races going back to the days of the classic 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral.

Spectacular Bid deserves to be rated as the best of the best. He was 24-for-24 lifetime between the distances of seven furlongs to 11/4 miles, with 14 of those wins coming in Grade 1 stakes. He virtually always won by clear-cut margins. He was absolutely sensational on speed figures, nearly always running tremendously fast races in relation to the speed of the track surface. He might have been the most tactically superior horse of all the great champions.

Spectacular Bid was the rare horse who had genuine sprinter speed and could comfortably run a 22-and-change opening quarter-mile but was also comfortable and effective when he was taken back well off the pace.

He led from start to finish nine times in his career, but also rallied from five to 10 lengths off the pace to win six times. He could be shut off and forced to take up in traffic on multiple occasions during a race and still respond to win by a wide margin in good time, like he did in the Florida Derby when he overcame a terrible ride by his teenage jockey, Ronnie Franklin.
