Middle East and Asian demand boost India's gold exports

``As the price of gold is near an all-time high, more Indian consumers are eager to melt down their old gold jewellery and items to capture the high prices,'' said M S Sonawala in Mumbai's gold hub, Zaveri Bazaar. This ensures that more bullion is available in the domestic market, and that retail houses and exporters need not import the expensive precious metal for their designs. ``Exports have been climbing ever since,'' explained Savera, with gold jewellery export being termed a big business. In January 2011, exports of gold jewellery from India jumped by 15%. India's export of gold jewellery at $ 569.32 million in January showed a growth of 15.38%  over the comparative figure of $ 493.43 million in January 2010, data showed. It is not just gold though that has skyrocketed. According to the provisional statistics pertaining to the export of gems and jewellery for May 2011 as compared to the same period of last year, overall exports of gems and jewellery at $3,705.59 million during May revealed a growth of 33.50%, as compared to $2,775.70 million for the same period of the previous year. In Australia too, India is keen to grow the business. ``In 2001, among Indian exports to Australia, the sector of gems, pearls, and jewellery registered an increase of 19% to A$ 65.3 million in comparison to the previous year's export of A$ 54.9 million. Though exports of gold and silverware was practically the same at A$ 12.6 million in 2001, exports of precious and semi precious stones increased by 23.8% to A$ 51.9 million in 2001. A similar situation seems to be playing out a decade later, though India imports gold too from that country,'' said bullion dealer Savera.
