Landscaping after the fact
My garden renovation project is proceeding fairly well, although — as with most of life's projects — taking longer than expected.
My project involves only a small amount of structural work: I developed a slightly sunken patio near the back fence and used the excavated earth to form a berm that adds to the patio's seclusion. Someday, after I finish the flagstone patio, I might relax there with an iPad.
Most of the renovation work involves moving existing plants and adding new plants to accomplish the overall design, which features a series of thematic beds.
This transition to thematic gardening provides a welcome feeling of order for me. Perhaps that is a reflection of a personal quirk, the result of the discovery at an early age of entropy.
The five largest beds hold collections of plants from the world's five "summer-dry climate" regions. I prefer that term to "Mediterranean climate" regions, because the Mediterranean basin is only one of the five regions. For review, the others are South Africa, the central coast of Chile, the southwestern coast of Australia and coastal California.
My garden design also includes additional thematic beds: a rose garden, an iris garden, a large salvia garden, a shade garden, a mixed succulent (mostly central American) bed, and a Japanese bed (mostly for peonies and other small plants from Japan that I had to keep).
A few small beds remain with hodgepodges of plants. I'll get to them someday!
There are plenty of other possible themes for a garden bed: a white garden, a some-other-color garden, a fern garden, a sculpture garden, a fragrance garden, a butterfly garden and a theme of your personal preference.
One of the most challenging themes to accomplish is the plant community garden. Such a garden contains only plants that grow together in nature. Plant communities exist all over the world, having developed to include plants that thrive under the same soil, exposure and climate conditions. In some cases, the plants have a subtle symbiotic relationship as well, but that is not essential to a plant community, as far as we know.
A good book on this approach to gardening in California is "Designing California Native Gardens: The Plant Community Approach to Artful, Ecological Gardens" (University of California Press, 2007), by Glenn Keator and Alrie Middlebrook.
