BETA kids take on the best of Rodgers and Hammerstein
The B.E.T.A. Repertory Theatre has served as a training ground for young performers since it was established in 1986. Based in Gulf Breeze, B.E.T.A. is directed by company founder Michelle Kerrigan. In addition to classes that teach singing, acting and dance, Kerrigan also provides several performance opportunities each year for B.E.T.A. participants. The production is broken down into five sections abbreviated versions of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals "Oklahoma," "Cinderella," "South Pacific," "Carousel" and "The Sound of Music." Each section includes costumes, props and minimal set pieces with the essence of the various musicals captured through dialogue, choreography and some of the best known songs. Kendall Parrett, 13, was the clear highlight of the "Oklahoma!" set. She portrays Laurie and offers a surprisingly mature voice and stage presence. She shone particularly brightly on the song "Oh What a Beautiful Morning," which was performed as a duet with Kathan Brannon, 12. Also turning in a good performance was 12-year-old Magen Huntley singing Ado Annie's signature song "I Cain't Say No." Macy Mateer, 11, was completely engaging as the title character in the "Cinderella" section. I liked her energy and expressiveness throughout, especially on the song "In My Own Little Corner." This young lady is very comfortable on stage and has an innate ability to make the audience enjoy what she's doing. Another highlight of this section was the duet between Macy and Vicki Edge, 16, who plays the Godmother. Vicki Edge came back with a surprising portrayal of Julie in the "Carousel" section. I knew she had a voice from seeing her as the Godmother in "Cinderella," but it came through even stronger with a beautiful rendering of "If I Loved You." Almost more impressive was how well she acted this lead role, making Julie seem very real. Logan Reeder, 11, showed nice vocal technique in the role of Nettie, especially on the song "You'll Never Walk Alone."
Kerrigan saved her best vocal ensemble for "The Sound of Music." Here the audience enjoyed Kayla Goliwas, 19, as Maria; Fenn Reeder, 14, as Rolf; and Kendall Parrett returning to stage as Liesl after her great work in "Oklahoma!" and other sections. Goliwas shone on the famous "Do Re Mi" number, and Fenn and Kendall displayed their vocal prowess on the duet "Sixteen Going on Seventeen.

On Broken Pieces-Sweat and Tears - Stories, Songs and Everything Else!
I didn’t know exactly what I would call this new episode but during my prayer time this dropped in my spirit, “On broken Pieces-Sweat and Tears”. Umm...I thought. You see after watching the birth of my other books come to life I figured I was about to see some tears of joy, instead I was now facing post-natal blues. As a result I started writing through those tears hoping to get a major breakthrough. Talking about one thing after another. Storm after storm began to break forth in my life. I felt like the person holding on to the flag-pole trying not to be blown away with the ferocious winds. I know it was nothing but the grace of God that kept me from not cracking under the pressure. Again I was thinking now that I had made it through the episodes of my teenage sons and seeing how they were finally acting like they found their senses I could breath a little. Boy was I WRONG! I came in from work and realized my spouse had starting packing up his side of the room. We had also just found out that the house we were living in was in foreclosure but we hadn’t receive a moving notice yet. So I asked, what’s going on? He blurted out- “I’m out of here. I am sick of Stockton!” My response was, “oh just like that, no let’s set and talk about it together or nothing.” He just looked stoned-faced and didn’t reply. So I said, “I see your mind is already made up“. All I could do was walk off and think now after putting twenty-five years into this relationship it splits , just like that. No done me wrong song or anything. Only a “I want you to know I’m not leaving you I’m leaving Stockton”. So now in the process of three months I had to encounter many major decisions. In the midst of this transition, I went from being married to now separated. I also had to go house hunting, pack things up, and continue to work to make ends meet. In the process I also learned during cutting utilities off and putting them on in a new location bills had not been paid in months. I also received a bill from PG&E for over $1,300 dollars. They stated “they had never billed me for electric in the former house only the gas.” I sat looking at that woman behind the screen thinking “I see why they put these screens up. I was feeling frustration upon frustration. Talking about brokeness, sweat and tears, I was just beginning to see the rain fall.
