Network Rail apprentices beat armed forces in Field Gun Competition
Network Rail’s apprentices took part in the annual Junior Leaders Field Gun Competition, held at HMS Collingwood in Gosport, Hampshire earlier this month.
In the ultimate battle of strength, endurance, speed, accuracy and team work, Network Rail apprentices forced the armed services to surrender.
Fending off the strength of all three military services, our apprentices claimed victory for the third year running.
The competition is open to those aged 16-25, with each crew of 18 required to run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the antique 12-pounder field gun – equivalent in weight to a small car – in the shortest possible time.
The winning Network Rail team beat 16 other teams from the three military services and other organisations, with another Network Rail team finishing second just 0.25 seconds behind the winners.
Steve Featherstone, director of maintenance for Network Rail paid tribute to the hard work of those involved:
“The teamwork, dedication and raw energy our teams displayed with every pace makes me extremely proud. Whilst competition is fierce, for us it is also about being able to participate as a team and to rise to the challenge that the event presents.
“There is also a real link with the teamwork and repetitive maintenance tasks that are necessary for our maintenance teams to excel.
“Everyone knows their roles as part of the team and to assemble a one tonne gun and gun carriage, travel 200 metres stopping twice to fire three shells each time, all in around one minute 22 seconds just shows what can be done with training and practice.

Back in January, we reported on the Lindell family as they embarked on their "One Tonne Life" challenge outside of Stockholm, Sweden. Three months into the project, the Lindells had reduced their carbon emissions by an impressive 64 percent, dropping from 7.29 tons of CO2 emissions per person per year to just 2.7 tons. Now, some six months into the challenge, the Lindells have slashed their emissions by nearly 80 percent, compared to January, and will finish the project with a paltry 1.5 tons of CO2 emissions per person per year. It's a big change, but falls short of the stated goal of emitting just one metric ton of carbon emissions per person per year. "One Tonne Life" is a project in which A-hus, Vattenfall and Volvo , along with partners ICA and Siemens, created the necessary preconditions for a climate-smart household. Over a six-month period, the Lindells have switched from their 1970s villa and aging vehicles to a climate-sensitive wooden house provided by A-hus and a battery-powered Volvo C30 Electric. Vattenfall provided renewable electricity and ICA and Siemens coached the family in the areas of food and household appliances. When Andreas Carlgren switches off Vattenfall's smart Energy Watch monitoring system in the "One Tonne Life" house, this will mark the end of the groundbreaking trial by the Lindell family (father Nils, mother Alicja and children Hannah and Jonathan) to cut carbon dioxide emissions to one tonne per person per year. This corresponds to the level that will probably be necessary in order to avoid serious climate changes. Over a period of six months, the Lindells have switched from their normal 1970s villa and ten-year-old cars to a brand-new, climate-smart wooden house from A-hus and a battery-powered Volvo C30 Electric. Vattenfall has provided renewable electricity, new energy technology and energy coaching. ICA and Siemens are the project's partners in the areas of food and household appliances. Emissions from transport dropped by more than 90 percent, not least thanks to the fact that the family's Volvo C30 Electric was recharged using electricity from hydro-power. The family's house, built by A-hus, produces its own electricity and with supplementary renewable electricity from hydro-power, carbon dioxide emissions from purchased electricity are almost zero. All told, carbon dioxide emissions from the family's home have been more than halved. Food is the third area in which the family made immense progress.
