Wednesdays, June – August, 2 p.m.. Learn with a group as the creative educators of The Dawes Arboretum bring your family closer to the wonders of the natural world. Subjects include trees, flowers, weather and many creatures great and small. There is no telling what we’ll get into with songs, activities, games, crafts and sometimes real animal visitors. Tickets for the annual Freedom Picnic will be on sale through 5 p.m. June 29 at Zerger Hall. The tickets are $3 to cover the picnic meal featuring hamburgers, brats, picnic side dishes and dessert. Local Elvis impersonator Jerry Markle is the entertainment. The Freedom Picnic will be held outside on the Zerger Hall campus lawn beginning at 11 a.m. July 1. It will be held inside if there is inclement weather.
The Fairfield Heritage Association is holding its 44th Tour of Homes on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 from 12-5 p.m. both days. “Town & Country” will include a self-guided tour of seven homes in and near Lancaster, offering a unique variety of architecture and decor, with tours of both the Sherman House and Georgian Museums included in the ticket cost. Tickets prices are $12 presale and $15 the day of the tour. They are available at Fairfield National Bank’s Kroger East, Meijer, and downtown locations and the Fairfield Heritage office at 105 E. Wheeling Street, all in Lancaster, or by phone or email. Children’s tickets are $6 and can be purchased through the FHA office or the day of the tour. Participants will receive a discount on admission to the Ohio Glass Museum that weekend and A Ha! A Hands-on Adventure will offer a free admission with a paid admission through August 1, 2011, with a home tour ticket. Guests are also encouraged to visit the latest exhibit at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio where admission is free. The Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, 145 E. Main St. in Lancaster, will host david hostetler unabridged from June 26 through September 4, 2011. David Hostetler is the creator of a series of original and captivating works in wood and bronze that honor and celebrate the female form. The exhibition will include sculpture, paintings, prints and early ceramics. He has been an artist for more than 60 years, beginning in World War II when he was injured and was given drawing materials by a Red Cross volunteer. After the war, Hostetler studied art history at Indiana University. He is a professor emeritus of Ohio University, where he taught for 38 years.
