Some happy, some skeptical of Obama's troop withdrawal plans
Mary Moltmann of Bull Valley remembers clearly the day the United States entered into the war in Afghanistan.
“I just wanted to throw up,” she said.
Moltmann was teaching psychology at McHenry County College. Several of her students were in Reserve units, and Moltmann, a self-identified hippie, was sick at the thought of her students leaving for war.
“One of the students was activated right out of my class, and so that war has always really had a face on it,” she said.
Although Moltmann is supportive of the men and women in the military – she regularly sends care packages to soldiers overseas – Moltmann does not support the U.S. war in Afghanistan. On Wednesday, she met with joy President Barack Obama’s call for a major withdrawal of American troops.
In a prime-time address, the commander-in-chief said that starting next month, the U.S. will begin to take troops out of Afghanistan.
His goal is 10,000 home by the end of 2011 and to remove 33,000 troops associated with the Afghan war by September 2012.
Casualties
At least 1,522 members of the U.S. military have died in Afghanistan since the U.S. invasion in late 2001.
Of those, 71 were Illinois troops, including 19 National Guard members and 52 from the other military branches.
To date, McHenry County has lost three natives in the war. Army Spc. Lukasz D. Saczek of Lake in the Hills and Army Sgt. Jason A. McLeod of Crystal Lake died in 2009, and Marine Staff Sgt. Christopher Antonik, 29, of Crystal Lake, was killed in 2010.
Antonik, a graduate of Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake, died a year ago this July. In September, he posthumously was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor for, while in Afghanistan, repeatedly putting himself in harm’s way to improve the outcome for his peers.
The nomination paperwork for his award depicts Antonik running across 200 meters of open ground and then “using grenades and his personal weapon in close-quarters fighting,” pushing the enemy out of the area.
Later the same day, Antonik pulled to safety a victim who had lost a portion of his leg after stepping on an improvised explosive device, which drew more enemy gunfire, the nomination said.
The next day, Antonik himself was mortally wounded. Though he had suffered severe internal injuries and lost the use of his left arm and leg, Antonik continued to lead and encourage the men under his charge until he finally succumbed to his injuries.
