Meireles – along with Maxi Rodriguez – has been linked with a move away from the club as manager Kenny Dalglish weighs up his midfield options having signed Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and being linked with a bid for Blackpool’s Charlie Adam . Plus he needs to bring in some cash to counter his summer spending spree, which could reach as much as £60 million if bids are successful for Adam, Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing and Ipswich’s Connor Wickham, while another Anfield target St Etienne winger Dmitri Payet , could cost as much as £11 million.

However, Liverpool’s rejection of Melo is being felt just as keenly by the Brazil international, who has made it clear he is unhappy about being offered as a makeweight in any deal for Merieles.

“Let us say that Juve are not respecting me, or at least that’s the impression I get,” he said angrily yesterday.

“I’m not just anyone. I’m not a bargaining chip to be used to reach anybody.”

Melo has been at Juve since signing from Fiorentina in 2009.

Liverpool striker David N’Gog’s move to Sunderland is being held up by the Frenchman’s wage demands.

N’Gog was believed at first to be part of the deal that took Jordan Henderson from the Stadium Of Light to Anfield but instead the two clubs decided to treat N’Gog’s transfer as a separate matter as he was away on holiday and wanted time to think over the move.

Sunderland have agreed to pay Liverpool £4 million for the 22-year-old who the Reds signed for £1.4 million from Paris Saint-Germain three years ago; however, the Black Cats say they won’t be able to pay him the same wage he has been earning at Anfield, believed to be around £40,000 a week.

Sunderland want N’Gog to take a pay cut while Kenny Dalglish has told him that he is no longer part of his plans at Anfield.

Gael Clichy to sign on the dotted line?

Liverpool lead the chase for want-away Arsenal defender Gael Clichy according to Setanta Sports .

Roma are interested in the left-back but it is believed the Frenchman favours a switch to Anfield and will hold out for King Kenny and Damien Comolli to make a move.

Clichy has just 12 months remaining on his contact at the Emirates so could be available for around £5m.

Jeffren shows sign of things to come at Anfield?

Barca winger Jeffren Suarez was on target for Spain u21s last night in spectacular fashion.

The 23-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer – and yesterday evening he showed why he is attracting interest.

Jeffren created a goal to bring Spain level in the dying minutes of the game and then fired in a thunderbolt to give his side a two-goal cushion in extra time.
