Expedition Impossible: Recap For Thursday, June 23, 2011

By honeySC

The Fab 3 are best friends and roommates. They are very excited to be there. The country boys are from Mississippi. The Latin Persuasion are from the concrete jungle and decide they will need their lip gloss to survive. The football players are looking forward to a whole new world.  Mom's Army has a strategy to knock them off one at a time.  No Limits include a blind member and their thought is that if the expedition leans to their expertise, they will do well.  Grandpa Warriors are not daunted by their age.

Based on the saying, "Choose your companions before choosing your road." If one of the team quits, the entire team is out.  The team arriving last each week will be eliminated.  The final team remaining will win three Ford Explorers and a hundred fifty thousand dollars.

The expedition begins with the words, be strong, work together, and never give up. Their first task is to run to flags at the very top of a sand dune.  No limits laughs at the Latin Persuasion who come wearing knee socks. They don't see how they will last for even a short period.  The Gypsies are in first place reaching the flags. They call themselves the Gypsies because they are free spirits and roam the world. They get their clue to travel the desert on camels that they select. Each person gets their own camel.  The football players are second. The Fab 3 come in third in this first task. The California Girls are in fifth place. Team Kansas comes in ninth to this point just behind the Firemen. They find dealing with the camels tough and have little clue how to deal with the stubborn ships of the desert. The Country Boys are having a real problem with one team member who is ready to give up at the very beginning when he struggles half way up the sand dune. When Latin Persuasion passes them by, the men become concerned and try to encourage their fallen team mate to get back up and head up the hill.  They literally pull Chad up and get him back on the trek.

Enduring the searing sun of the Sarhara each group the Gypsies are in first place, but No Limits moves out ahead. Latin Persuasion's lack of teamwork moves them back to last place.

At their first checkpoint they have to gather a full gallon of water. The instructions say to find the water the local way. No one can figure out where the water is.  There is a palm tree and they have their camels, but one team, the Fab 3 begins to dig in the sand.  No Limits digs and digs. Many groups decide to do the same and they finally discovered the water. Fab 3, Gypsies, and No Limits fill up their jugs, and the Football Players use their spot which irritates the Fab 3.

James Cameron, Enric Sala Named National Geographic Explorer ...

WASHINGTON—Two outstanding explorers — filmmaker and alternative-energy proponent James Cameron and marine ecologist Enric Sala — are the National Geographic Society’s newest Explorers-in-Residence. Both were honored today at a special gathering of National Geographic’s top explorers at Society headquarters.

Explorers-in-Residence are some of the world’s preeminent explorers and scientists and represent a broad range of science and exploration; they develop programs in their respective areas of study, carrying out field work supported by the Society. The group includes a geographer, three paleontologists, an archaeologist, a geneticist, conservationists and leaders in several other disciplines.

As a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Cameron will apply his distinctive storytelling skills and innovative filmmaking technologies to National Geographic Society projects and programs. Sala, formerly a National Geographic Fellow, will continue his leadership of Pristine Seas, an exploration, research and conservation project that aims to find, survey and help protect the last healthy and undisturbed places in the ocean.

“We are thrilled to welcome James Cameron to National Geographic’s cadre of explorers and to elevate Enric Sala’s important work on ocean conservation,” said Terry Garcia, National Geographic executive vice president for Mission Programs. “They perfectly round out our very diverse team of explorers.”

Cameron has written and directed scores of films, among them “The Terminator,” “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” “Titanic” and “Avatar.” His films have blazed new trails in visual effects and have set numerous performance records, both domestically and abroad, including a record-setting 11 Oscars for “Titanic.” “Avatar,” a 3-D science fiction epic, reflected more than two years in development of new production technologies; it won Golden Globe Awards for best director and best picture and three Academy Awards.

Work on “Avatar” inspired a new mission for Cameron — illuminating the plight of indigenous peoples, especially those involved in struggles over energy issues, some of whom came forward after seeing the film. Since the film’s release, Cameron has spent some 18 months in energy battlegrounds — in the Alberta, Canada, tar sands and the Amazon — meeting with indigenous peoples whose environment and way of life are threatened. Cameron also organized a task force of deep-ocean experts to address offshore oil production and ocean engineering issues raised by the 2010 Gulf oil spill. He continues to work in the arena of alternative energy.
